Main reason for this is the ability to connect friends and families. And some of them for dating purposes. So not only youngsters are into social networking, even adults tries to click on their mouse.
of course! My mom and dad do have accounts on different websites.. 
They are of age like late fifties. Actually, social networking is best instrument in communicating co-workers especially those works like this.
Even my mother is always asking me if she do have a lot of friends on facebook and finds her schoolmates during elementary for their Alumni gathering. Sometimes I'm bothered of her but it only shows that even adults now are hooked into social networking.
Oh yeah, the funny is, my dad was the first one to have fb account in our family. He has been so updated with things like this. I can't imagine if he has a tumblr account. 
Oh he has a Tumbler account while me I don't have. He is so up to date on that way.

well that's fact, previously FB was very good as they didn't allowed porn or anything but as of now there are allowing many vulnerable, porn pics etc. Even as of now G+ is emerging even they have half of the users are promoting porn and adult content, dating sites etc.
